You’ve probably heard of 2048-bit encryption, or seen the HTTPS markup in your address bar indicating that the site has an SSL certificate. Do I use a 3rd party payment processor?
If your e-commerce site forwards your visitors to a 3rd party payment processor (like PayPal) to enter the credit card information then you don’t need an SSL certificate because your website won’t touch the credit card information. Just make sure none of the credit card details get entered when the address bar still shows your domain name. Note that PayPal allows you to accept the credit card information on your site or forward visitors to their site. If you accept the credit card information on your site, you need an SSL certificate.

Do I have a login form?
If your users enter a username and password to login to your site without an SSL certificate, an attacker can easily see their username and password in clear text. This would allow someone else to impersonate your visitor, but it allows for a far more dangerous possibility: Because users often use the same password on many sites (including their bank accounts), an attacker can potentially compromise many other accounts. If you let people store a password with you, you must take responsibility for protecting it, even if the security of your own site isn’t critical.

It is true that most login forms don’t currently use SSL. This means that most login forms are vulnerable. With the number of cheap SSL certificates available, it is becoming more and more worthwhile to secure login forms. If you want to forego the SSL certificate without having to worry about securing the login information, you can also use OpenID, Facebook Connect, or another technology that lets users log in on a another site and return to your site. In short, if your website is a collection of pictures of your pet slug “Flash” with a small blog and doesn’t require visitors to log in, you probably don’t need SSL. If you have a login form or send or receive private customer information, then you need SSL. If you run an e-commerce website where people provide you with credit card information directly on your site, you absolutely need SSL.

Google has announced that going HTTPS — adding a SSL 2048-bit key certificate on your site — will give you a minor ranking boost.

Google says this gives websites a small ranking benefit, only counting as a “very lightweight signal” within the overall ranking algorithm. In fact, Google said this carries “less weight than other signals such as high-quality content.” Based on their tests, Google says it has an impact on “fewer than 1% of global queries” but said they “may decide to strengthen” the signal because they want to “encourage all website owners to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to keep everyone safe on the web.”

Google also said based on their tests for the past few months, the HTTPS signal showed “positive results” in terms of relevancy and ranking in Google’s search results.

As you may remember, at SMX West, Matt Cutts, Google’s head of search spam, said he’d love to make SSL a ranking factor in Google’s algorithm. Well, less than five months after that announcement, and while he is on an extended leave, Google is making it a reality.

Should you be concerned when switching from your HTTP to HTTPS site for SEO purposes? Not so much. Google has been telling webmasters it is safe to do so for years. But you need to take the proper steps to ensure your traffic doesn’t suffer. That means make sure to communicate to Google that you moved your site from HTTP to HTTPS. Google promises to release more documentation in the future, but for now has provided the following tips

  • Decide the kind of certificate you need: single, multi-domain, or wildcard certificate
  • Use 2048-bit key certificates
  • Use relative URLs for resources that reside on the same secure domain
  • Use protocol relative URLs for all other domains

Google announced the algorithm update at a press event last week. The press corp learned that Hummingbird was described as the biggest Google algorithm change since Caffeine, and that it is designed to let Google quickly parse entire questions and complex queries and return relevant answers, as opposed to looking at queries on a keyword-by-keyword basis.

Hummingbird is designed to help Google understand your webpages the way it understands the data in its Knowledge Graph. Google calls the algorithm “Hummingbird” because it’s “precise and fast”. It hasn’t been since 2001 that the algorithm was “so dramatically rewritten” (Sullivan’s words).

Hummingbird should better focus on the meaning behind the words. And it may better understand the actual location of your home, if you’ve shared that with Google. It might understand that ‘place’ means you want a brick-and-mortar store. It might get that ‘iPhone 5s’ is a particular type of electronic device carried by certain stores. Knowing all these meanings may help Google go beyond just finding pages with matching words.

Google said that Hummingbird is paying more attention to each word in a query, ensuring that the whole query — the whole sentence or conversation or meaning — is taken into account, rather than particular words.

The goal is that pages matching the meaning do better, rather than pages matching just a few words. Hummingbird is designed to apply the meaning technology to billions of pages from across the web, in addition to Knowledge Graph facts, which may bring back better results.

So, Hummingbird is really just an extension of Google’s ongoing strategy to become less dependent on keywords, which does have implications for SEO, and while webmasters may not have to worry about a major drop-off in rankings like with updates like Panda or Penguin, this could be more of an ongoing struggle for those competing to get on search results pages.

Keywords are becoming less and less important to search engine ranking success as Google gets smarter at figuring out what things mean, both on the query side of things and on the webpage side of things. The algorithm still consists of over 200 different signals that webmasters can potentially take advantage of to gain a competitive edge.

It’s probably going to be more important than ever to give Google as much information about your site as possible, so that it “understands” it. I would imagine that Google will continue to give webmasters new tools to help with this over time. We’re really glad you asked! Local SEO, or LSEO is a specialized kind of online marketing that increases visibility for businesses interested in ranking for geographically-related keywords. A large part of Portland LSEO involves ranking in algorithms designed specifically for your geographic area such as Google Places, Google Plus, Google Maps, Facebook Pages and any of these engines’ counterparts, as well as ranking well in organic results for local keywords.

  • If your business has a physical location, you’ve undoubtedly been told that you need local SEO. But for many business owners, local SEO remains shrouded in mystery; what does “Local SEO” even mean? What do you need to do? Why do you need it?

And use your City and State names in your Title tags, Meta descriptions, and the content on your site (as it fits, don’t just force it in there.)

Persuading your customers and clients to leave great reviews on your Google local page is the single most important thing you can do. Let your customers or clients know that they can rate their experience with you on your Google Places profile. Have logos up in your windows or in your office showing the places where people can leave reviews. Include your profile links in your email communications (particularly in follow-up emails after a purchase or visit), direct mail, and anywhere else you can think of to get it in front of customers.

Google uses “centroid bias”, which means that if someone searches for “Portland Dentist” there will be a bias towards the dentist locations that are closest to the center of the city. For this type opf search, if you’re on the outskirts of a city, or in a city neighboring a major metropolitan area, you’re going to be at a disadvantage.

Now when we are talking about Internet Marketing by itself, that is what people usually mean when they say things like Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Local SEO (LSEO), SEM, Social Media, and Display or Banner Advertising. They all take place on the Internet in some form. SEO, SEM, LSEO all take place on the search engines, more likely Google. The SEO is in the main area of Google, this area is commonly know as the organic section. LSEO is the area next to the map on the first page of Google. SEM or commonly know as ADWORDS or Pay Per Click. It is the area on the very top of the page in the shaded area and along the side of the first page of Google. Google Nose suggests fictitious technology for getting computers and mobile devices to emit scent, as well as features like AdScent ads for florists and other businesses, scratch ‘n sniff e-books, scent captions for YouTube (“oyster sauce with a hint of leather” for a seal video), and “Foodles” instead of doodles.

Of course, Nose search results would show you what other users have sniffed. Yes some are pretty gross, like “unattended litter box.” But imagine inhaling samples of wine, coffee, chocolate, pizza, or anything you take olfactory delight in.

Is Google’s Same-Day Delivery Service Coming to Portland?

Google announced today a same-day delivery service today in San Francisco. For Portland small businesses and residents we are curious to see if the same service will be rolling out in Portland any time soon.

Google Inc launched a same-day delivery service in the San Francisco Bay Area on Thursday as the world’s largest Internet search company works with retailers such as Target Corp to compete more with e-commerce leader Amazon.com Inc.

Google has been testing the service, called Google Shopping Express, with employees for a few months. The company opened it up to the public on Thursday morning in a limited launch focused on San Francisco residents and others living south of the city from San Mateo to San Jose.

Shoppers who sign up will get six months of free, same-day delivery of online orders placed with select retailers in the area. Google plans to charge for the service in the future, but it has not decided how much yet.

Companies taking part in the test include national retailers such as Target, Office Depot Inc, Staples Inc and Toys ‘R’ Us Inc and smaller, local firms such as Blue Bottle Coffee and Palo Alto Toy & Sport.

Google is working with local courier companies that pick up products from local stores and deliver them to shoppers’ homes.

Google Shopping Express is the latest sign the company is expanding from its online search roots into e-commerce, where it is competing more with Amazon, the world’s largest Internet retailer.

By getting into local delivery services, Google is joining an increasingly crowded field.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world’s largest retailer, is testing a same-day delivery service called Walmart To Go in five metro areas.

EBay Inc launched a same-day delivery service in San Francisco and New York last year.

Google Opens Up Universal Analytics For All in Beta

Keeping up with what your fans and followers do as they move from one screen to another has sometimes been difficult. For Google Analytics users, this process will get a bit easier with the launch of Universal Analytics in public beta. Originally available only to paying customers, Universal Analytics is now available to all users.

Google announced the availability of Universal Analytics in public beta on Friday. Universal Analytics was originally offered to paying customers but everyone can now get access via their free Google Analytics account.

What Google’s Universal Analytics Offers

If you’re new to this terrain, Google Analytics offers a free way to find out what’s happening on your website by simply adding a simple code to each page. Often this process is automated by blog platforms and webhosts so that you can just add your account code via your control panel.

You’re then able to track a somewhat overwhelming array of information about how many visitors you have, how many visits are made, what countries they come from, how long they stay on the site and what devices they use to view the site. There has been a mobile element available but Universal Analytics should improve this process, according to Google Analytics help, via:

  • Simplified feature configuration
  • Custom dimensions & custom metrics
  • Multi-platform tracking

Old timey users will have to set up a new web property to use the new features. They say there’s going to be some kind of migration guide which may mean they’re going to introduce an easy way to switch over your old web property records to the new system but you’ll still need to add the new code to your site to get new features.

Visualize Your Google Analytics

Google Analytics isn’t the most user friendly tool for quickly grasping the big picture. Visual.ly recently introduced a free Google Analytics Report. This will make it not only easier to get a quick overview of what’s happening but will also be useful in creating reports for presentation.

Portland Organic Link Building and SEO: Link Anchors And Descriptions, The Right Way

Let’s discuss how to make those links you’re developing look totally organic and natural to search engines. This is a cornerstone to good Portland SEO.

Link Anchor Texts — What It’s All About

First things first. Link anchor text is the visible text in a hyperlink that you click to visit another Website or page. In HTML terms, link anchor text is the text placed between the anchor tags (<a> and </a>), hence the name. Here goes an HTML code snippet of an anchor text:

And on your page this code will look like this:

Since the Google “Florida” update (rolled out November 2003) link anchor texts have become hugely important from the SEO perspective. Here’s why.

The Hilltop Algorithm (patented Google’s algo effective since the “Florida” update) states that Google will associate your Website with the anchor text of incoming links. What this means is that if you use “blue widget accessories” in the anchor text of your incomings links, Google will assign a higher relevancy score to your site for “blue widgets” as well as “blue widget accessories”, and rank it accordingly in its search results.

Currently, this is one of the fundamental aspects behind the way Google works and ranks its search results.

Always Do It The Natural Way

Now, one of the commonest mistakes Webmasters make is take their keyword phrases, stuff them into link anchors and then email people with link exchange offers asking everyone to use the exact same anchor text by all means.

This is not the way to go. Allow me to repeat that: This is NOT the way to go! This is the way Google seriously frowns upon. Why? You guessed it — it doesn’t look natural, it doesn’t feel natural, so it’s not natural, and you are asking for trouble if you do that because Google will think you are trying to manipulate its search results.

Think about it. If people linked naturally to your site, would they use all the same anchor texts? ‘Course not! The anchor texts would be all different.

So the answer to the “How do I make my anchor texts natural?” question is “Vary them!” Yes, vary them, and you’ll be well on your way to making Google love the links pointing to your site and rank your site higher for the keywords you target.

For example, you could use a slightly different anchor text every once in a while to achieve that. So instead of putting “blue widgets” into each and every anchor text, try to get your incoming links to look like this:

Comprehensive info on blue widgets
Blue widgets discounts available!
How to choose blue widgets wisely
Cost-effective blue widget services

…and so on, you get the idea.

Link Descriptions — Always Provide Natural Context For Your Links

If you want to benefit from your incoming links, you want to make sure your links appear on a page that has other (relevant) text. If a page consists of links and nothing but links, chances are it will look like a link farm to the search engines, which, of course, is a bad thing.

So make sure your link appears in the right context — surrounded by relevant text that includes your keywords. When you email other Webmasters asking to place a link to your site, give them a link description to use.

And yes, you guessed what I’m about to say: The right way of doing things is to avoid recognizable patterns and vary your link descriptions every so often so it looks perfectly organic to Google. Again, instead of using a description stuffed with your keywords such as “Blue widget company selling blue widgets!”, make it look natural by varying the description and making it sound natural:

“XYZ company is a recognized leader in the widget technology. The company’s primary specialization is blue widgets. Follow the link above to find out more.”

“XYZ offers value-added blue widgets to hundreds of happy customers from around the world. Find out more about our widgets by using the link above.”

Put some effort into writing at least several proper link descriptions, and not only will you provide more value to the human visitors, you will also make search engines rank your site higher in their SERPs, because your linking strategy will look more natural.

At the risk of sounding boring, let me emphasize this one more time. Don’t think varied link anchor texts and descriptions are not that important and don’t underestimate the power of Google. Use the same anchor text for a thousand of links and the new Google will simply devalue or even disregards your incoming links at all. You have been warned.

So when developing your backlink campaign, come prepared. Create several link anchor texts and descriptions (the more the better, actually), and use different ones every once in a while for your Portland SEO.

What Is Theme Relevancy And Why Should I Care?

What theme relevancy means is the site that places a link to yours (an vice versa) should be relevant or related to your sites “theme”. Ideally, your link partner’s Website should complement, but not compete with whatever you are offering.

For instance, if you are selling blue widgets, it makes sense to get a link from a site selling widget accessories. Or, if you are selling Search Engine Optimization services, it’s a good idea to get links pointing to SEO-related articles, search engines news and forums. And, in both examples, it’s definitely NOT a good idea to exchange links with casino, gambling, or real estate sites.

This is not to say that blue widget buyers never gamble or never purchase real estate. But if they came to your site looking for your products or services such as blue widgets or SEO services, there’s probably one chance out of a million they are interested in casinos or real estate right now.

This is how your site’s visitors would have thought, and this is how search engines think it should be. Google, Yahoo!, Bing and other major search engines have been designed with one purpose — to provide value to their users, which means relevant, accurate search results. Their algorithms may — and will — change, but this underlying principle will remain the same.
“Hey, A Link Is Still A Link, No Matter Where It Comes From, Right?”

Wrong! This is a misconception that can easily get you in trouble. This approach could bring you short-term benefits 2 or 3 years ago, but major search engines (especially Google) have gotten a lot smarter since then.

If you still think theme relevancy is nice-to-have rather than a must-have, well, think again. Get a hundred unrelated links pointing to your site, and several things will happen, none of which involves high rankings for you:

  • Google will simply not count these links when computing your ranking. This is the best thing that could happen since it doesn’t involve penalizing your site;
  • Google will think (justifiably) that your site belongs to a different theme (say, gambling) and treat it accordingly. This could mean your site will go up in gambling-related search results, and down in the results you seek (such as blue widget results). Now, you don’t want this, do you?
  • With the last Google algo update (dubbed “Big Daddy”), Google will decide (again, justifiably) you are trying to trick search engines and will simply drop your site from its index. Ouch. That was definitely NOT intended.

So here’s a rule of thumb: Always keep your site’s visitors in mind when running your link building campaigns. Try to get into your visitors’ shoes and think what resources they would be numberswiki.com

interested in. Would they be interested in casino sites? No? Then don’t do it.
“OK, So How Do I Find All These Beautiful Sites Related To Mine?”

Easy. There are several ways you can do it:

  1. Do a search in major search engines such as Google using your niche keywords. Scan the results, copy the URLs you are interested in into a spreadsheet, wash rinse and repeat.
  2. Visit a good link directory. Link directories are human-compiled directories of sites broken down into categories. DMOZ is an excellent example. Simply find your niche category in a directory, and search for relevant link partners there.
  3. A trick you could use is examine your competition. Your competitors, who are selling, say, red widgets, most likely have other sites that link to them. You can use the LINK:WWW.COMPETITOR.COM command in Google, for example, to find out who.

So really, you can do it all by hand. The only problem is that finding quality link partners for your site — as important for your site’s success as it is — is very time-consuming. So if the above does not seem easy for you, here’s the good part.

Portland Internet Marketing: Google Releases Top Health-Related Searches for 2012

Google’s annual roundup of the year’s top search trends revealed that people took to the internet to learn more about Whitney Houston, Hurricane Sandy and Big Bird, but an unlikely pain in the butt joined the group, too: hemorrhoids.

The top trending health issue in the United States this year was “hemorrhoids,” according to Google’s annual “zeitgeist” roundup of the world’s hottest search trends, and doctors say it may be because patients would rather ask Google than their physicians.

“I’m not exactly surprised that it is something people would rather Google as opposed to discuss it with their doctors,” said Dr. Patrick Okolo, chief of endoscopy at Johns Hopkins Hospital. “Even though it is very common and affects anywhere from 14 to 20 million Americans, most people do not discuss it with their doctors for those reasons.”

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anus or lower rectum, caused by any condition that could impede the flow of blood back to the heart and lungs. Pregnancy, straining or having a difficult time in the bathroom are among the causes of hemorrhoids.

Google zeitgeist spokeswoman Roya Soleimani said it’s not clear why hemorrhoids shot to the top of the list this year, but its spot on the trends list (instead of the most searched list) means that its popularity is unique to 2012.

“I’m not quite sure why there was a spike in hemorrhoid searches this year, but something that was distinct and showed in the data brought it to number one,” Soleimani said.

are caused by obesity, it’s possible that America’s expanding waistlines are also to blame for the extra internet searches, Okolo said.

It’s often blood on the toilet paper that tips most people off to their hemorrhoids, though many people have no symptoms, he said. Despite what he called an urban legend, hemorrhoids are not painful unless they’re infected or associated with a tear in the anal canal.

However, 12 percent of rectal bleeding is serious.

“It’s a serious symptom and one that is often ignored,” Okolo said. “Probably a good proportion of the 47,000 to 50,000 deaths in this country to colon cancer probably start in ignored rectal bleeding.”

Other top health search trends unique to 2012 included diaper rash, gastroesophageal reflux disease and diarrhea. Soleimani said “pregnancy symptoms,” a common search every year, topped Google’s symptom search for 2012.

“Celiac disease” came in at No. 9 on Google’s list. Soleimani found it especially interesting because “What is gluten?” was a top search last year.

But celiac disease isn’t new, said gastroenterologist Dr. Kelly Thomsen, who works at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. It was discovered during World War II food shortages, when a physician noticed that his patients who had chronic diarrhea and stomach problems suddenly found relief when they were forced to cut grains out of their diets.

Celiac disease is an immune system response to gluten — the protein in wheat, barley and rye – that damages the intestines, Thomsen said. About one in 133 people have it.

“I don’t think we’re truly having a surge in the number of people affected by celiac disease, but there’s probably more awareness,” she said.

Celebrities like Emmy Rossum, Elizabeth Hasselbeck and Keith Olberman have all gone public with their celiac disease within the last few years.

  • Encourage companies that don’t export a lot of materials to export more.
  • Build a pipeline that makes it easier to export. Some 18 percent of Portland’s economy depends on exports, much higher than the national average of 11 percent. However, 89 percent of the area’s companies either aren’t exporting at all or aren’t even considering it.
  • Market the city’s various business proclivities, such as clean technology and other clusters.

Mr. Quelch: The Shanghai campus will double in size by the end of 2013. We also have a campus that we opened in Beijing in 2010 and we currently have operations in Shenzhen that may convert into a fully fledged campus within the next two to three years.

We also have an appetite for going west, and looking at that hundred million people in the Chengdu-Xian-Chongqing triangle, who will eventually want their own business school and will not necessarily want—or be able—to fly to Beijing or Shanghai.

The reason why Stanford exists is because Harvard always thought that Californians would be happy to come east to Boston, and never imagined they’d want their own Harvard, a.k.a. Stanford.

WSJ: The No. 1 complaint of foreign companies in China is lack of management talent. Isn’t that a huge opportunity for you?

Mr. Quelch: First of all, China’s pace of expansion has outrun the speed with which managers can experientially develop themselves, and so our role is to be an accelerant. We take experienced or high-potential young managers, and we accelerate the speed with which they can assume more management and leadership responsibilities.

The parade set off from the southern tip of Manhattan and moved slowly north to City Hall as fans dressed head-to-toe in Giants gear cheered and confetti wafted slowly down from the high-rises that line the street.

Manning, joined by coach Tom Coughlin, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other teammates, waved and grinned from the float as a deep roar rose from the crowds. The team will be honored with symbolic keys to the city at a City Hall Plaza ceremony.

Some fans waited since 6 a.m. to catch a glimpse of their favorite players. About half of a Long Island high school class skipped school to see “a whole nation coming together in one place – this parade,” said Mike King, 16, of Wantagh, N.Y.

King and seven school friends got up at dawn, arriving by subway in lower Manhattan to join the crowds packed behind police barricades lining Broadway. He attributed the win to the stellar performance of Manning and the hold-your-breath catch by Mario Manningham that led to the game-winning drive.

It’s Been Good to Knol You Portland Copywriters and SEO Pros

I know, I know, I Knol – This isn’t exactly news, but I wanted to wait a bit before I rang in on Knol’s potential impact on Oregon Copywriters and SEO Pros. The truth is, we’ve recently created Knols for several clients and the result has been that the targeted keyword search terms we used displayed at a higher ranking in search results for the Knols than they did for the original content (rewritten) which carried the exact same keywords. And the search results appeared overnight. What does this all mean for small businesses and the Oregon Copywriters and SEO Pros they may hire to write their Knol?

Well, they jury is still out on that one. Here’s what the Christian Science Monitor had to say:

But for some, it’s[Google Knol] a stretch – not technologically, but ethically.

…With each foray into content, it raises concerns about conflict of interest with its original function as unbiased search engine – concerns that Google search would be disposed to point to Google content first.

…Google keeps secret the algorithms that rank search results, meaning that users are left to trust the company not to favor its own burgeoning content over others.

…content could be “scraped” off another page … dumped onto a knol, and show up higher on Google’s search results than the original … What’s more, a Google algorithm clearly noted the original page, but still ranked the knol higher.

Google Continues to go Gaga, Loco Over Local

Does it feel like Google has been loco over local search results and relevancy lately? If so, here’s the reason: Google has been aggressively updating Google Places and rolling out new products such as Hotpot (a hyper-local, user reviewed, social recommendation engine) with an aim toward improving local results and displaying these results above organic listings.

What this means for Oregon businesses: Local businesses have a competitive edge over non-local businesses.

In a video uploaded to Google’s Webmaster YouTube channel (watch it on our video page), Matt Cutts, Google, addressed this comment: “… how can an out of town company compete with the local based (and locally housed) competition without lying to show up in these results?”

Cutts explains in the video that the the entire first page of organic rankings is there for out-of-towner to compete on. But this didn’t really answer the commentor’s question. So, what he didn’t say is that if your company is not local, you just aren’t going to be able to compete with businesses that appear in the local results.

Our advice is this: If you want to compete in a local market where you do not have a physical location, you may just need to get a local phone number and a local mailing address (street only, Google Places will not work with a PO Box) and set up a virtual shop in that geographic market. This trend, focus on local results and relevancy, is going to continue, especially now that Google has entered the mobile geolocator race with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

On the Wire Today: Microsoft, Yahoo Ad Search Deal = Ying?

The AP in Seattle today reported that Microsoft and Yahoo may have finalized a Internet search advertising partnership aimed at narrowing Google’s chunk of the lucrative piece of the online advertising market pie.

Microsoft just recently launched Bing, it’s new search engine, which leads us to nickname the new Yahoo, Bing ad alliance as “Ying”.

As of now, it looks as though Yahoo will handle ad sales and customer service and Microsoft will power search results and display the appropriate ads to display.

It is unsubstantiated, but expected that part of the deal includes Yahoo promoting Bing on its engine.

Google’s Chrome-Plated Browser, a Search Engine Optimization Copywriter’s Friend or Foe?

With their introduction of Chrome, an open-source operation, they may be putting some noses out of joint, privacy-wise.

Ripples began shimmering before Chrome was released for download. Concerned privacy gurus delved deeply into Chrome’s End User License agreement, and claimed that it gives Google a perpetual right to use anything anyone enters into Chrome. Obviously this is a concern to everyone, inlcuding copywriters and search engine optimization experts, because – face it- we all have our little tricks, tips and secret methods.

In Section 11 of the EUL it states that users retain copyright to their works, “by submitting, posting, or displaying the content,” but…  “you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and nonexclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display, and distribute any content which you submit, post, or display on or through the services.”
